Utility Profession & Applications
 
In view of the rapid development of underground utilities in recent years, UTI and HKU (Department of Civil Engineering)
have jointly organized ‘Utility Profession & Applications’ Applied Learning Course since 2007-09 Cohort of Piloting, with
the following objectives:

 

  • Equip secondary students to be professionals in future for engineering, surveying and utility practitioners;

  • Provide students with fundamental knowledge, skills and management about the utility industry;
     
  • Increase the safety awareness and collaboration of secondary students.

     

 
Course Content

 

  • Fundamental Principles of utility management and skills which include Pipe Condition Survey, Water Leakage Detection & Control, Utility Survey, Pipe Rehabilitation, Conduit Condition Evaluation (CCTV Survey) and Manhole Internal Condition Survey
     
  • Safety precautions and regulations at works, include Confined Space Work, working at height and slopes
     
  • Applications of utility-related equipments, such as Pipe Cable Locator (PCL), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Global Positioning System (GPS) and Integrated Data Management System for Utility Management (IDMS)
     
  • Utility Surveying Project
     
  • Site and Company Visits
